Clydie King - Missin' My Baby
1965....Clydie King, a singer who started recording at the age of 13, and progressed to become one of the most in demand singers of the LA music scene. Clydie was in the employment of Ray Charles as a Raelette....She even did a stint with Don Julian's Meadowlarks. But it was a number of mid 60's singles on Imperial that were to be the highmark of her solo career. Done at Gold Star with most of the 'Wrecking Crew', 'Missin' My Baby' is one of the best records to come out of LA during this time....with No apology to Phil Spector.Clydie went on to sing with a who who's of music superstars....Dylan, Rolling Stones, Streisand, but Pookie will always Think of Clydie with the sound of this one. On my list of 'How did This not become a hit?'

Lulu...from the 'New Routes' album done in Muscle Shoals. This girl can flat out Sing. The Pookster loves this one. One sassy Scottish girl here.
The Unifics - Dawn Of A New Day
Переглядів 6 тис.9 років тому
The last single by The Unifics. This one done on Jerry and Billy Butler's Fountain Records. Al Johnson wanted to write more of the Unifics material, and so had parted ways with Guy Draper, who steered their career from 1967. Sadly, the group broke up after this record released. Al Johnson went on to record some solo records in the 70's and 80's. This is a great track with nice production from t...
The Lovelites - Love Is Pretty
Переглядів 5 тис.9 років тому
Patti Hamilton and the Lovelites from '70-'71. This the first track that featured both Joni Berlman and Rhonda Grayson, the duo that would sing on countless Chicago Soul hits thru the 80's. Pookie loves the laid back style of this one, and the atmosphere Patti creates is enchanting. Hope you enjoy one from the Flip Side column.
Gaslight - I'm Gonna Get You
Переглядів 8 тис.9 років тому
Gaslight was Oliver 'Butch' Cheatham, Michael Eatmon, Jerome Abney, and Anthony 'Mitch' Mitchell. This group of Detroit guys only made a handful of records, but never a bad one. This is my favorite from 1973 on the Grand Junction label. They had the fortune of having Motown's Paul Riser arrange this one, and it is a special sound they've created here. Oliver Cheatham went on to score a couple o...
The Egyptians - Can I Believe
Переглядів 4 тис.9 років тому
Pookie knows virtually nothing of the Egyptians....Do know they recorded for Earl Fox's MY Records out of Little Rock,Arkansas, and put out a couple of 45's. This track made it's way to a couple Pittsburgh DJ's playlists, and still gets a play on the weekend Oldies shows. Pookie likes this one, and hopes you do too.
Billy Butler & Infinity - Now You Know
Переглядів 20 тис.9 років тому
A Pookie favorite from Billy Butler and his group Infinity. Written by Terry Callier and group member Larry Wade. Other members are Phyllis Knox, and former Enchanter Errol Batts. One of the stellar cuts on the album, 'Hung Up On You', released in '72/'73, brother Jerry didn't get a hold of this one for himself. Billy is one of most under-rated of all the Chicago Soul artists. And he is, a pook...
Mighty Marvelows - You're Breaking My Heart
Переглядів 4,8 тис.9 років тому
The Mighty Marvelows from Chicago Hgts. Best known for their '64 hit 'I Do', or perhaps 'In The Morning'. The Marvelows became Mighty when they found out the LA based Marvellos were gigging all over the west coast using their songs. This is the last single the Mighty ones released. They were the Paden Brothers....Frank and Johnny, Willie Stevenson, Jesse Smith, and lead singer Melvin 'Butch' Mas...
The Passions - Just Another Reason
Переглядів 4,2 тис.9 років тому
The Passions here are the fellas out of Gary Ind. who would later be known as Newday. At this point, the members were Roosevelt Christmas ,Eldridge (El) Anthony, John Coleman, and Doyle Cole. This record is a nice take on the Curtis Mayfield tune done by The Fascinations, then Donnie Hathaway and June Conquest. Recorded in Chicago at the old RCA Studios with producer Leo Austell and leased to C...
Cash McCall - I'll Always Love You
Переглядів 4,5 тис.10 років тому
Cash McCall is a prolific songwriter, guitarist, arranger, producer, and under-appreciated Blues/Soul singer. One of Pookie's favorite artists to make Chicago his home base, Cash made some really good records in the 60's and '70's. This is a fave, and a good one. Cash was busy at Chess records when this track wasa done around the corner at PS Studios. He was doing guitar/bass work for Little Mil...
Johnny Stewart - Misery Loves Company
Переглядів 6 тис.10 років тому
From 1963, a great Soul track by Johnny Stewart. Released on Bob Lee's Start Records, the younger brother of Billy Stewart accounts himself so very well. A lot of talent in that family as brothers James and Frank sang as well. The Four Jewels it is believed backed Johnny on this one, as they had also released a Start 45 in Summer '63 as well. Pookie loves this track. Sadly, Johnny only released...
Candace Love - I Want To Get Back
Переглядів 3,2 тис.10 років тому
Candace Love...one of the many fine Soul singers from Chicago's heyday of the 60's-70's. This is the promo version of 'I Want To Get Back', not the issue master. This girl worked as a Chicago school teacher, but doubled as a fledgling recording artist. She worked with the Detroit team, the Brothers of Soul, and primarily with Fred Bridges, also a personal friend of Candace. This original master...
Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles - I'm Still Waiting
Переглядів 16 тис.10 років тому
Philly meets Chi-Town. From '66, Patti LaBelle takes a swing at Curtis Mayfield's track 'I'm Still Waiting'. Pookie's favorite version of this one, tho the cut by the Impressions is quite good. Love the sweet vocal background as well...tho Pookie admits he's still secretly in love with Cindy Birdsong....but don't tell Darlene Love. Enjoy one from Pookie's,'How was this not a big hit?' list.
The Occasions - Baby Don't Go
Переглядів 6 тис.10 років тому
The Occasions were the first musical project of former NFL player Jim Brown. The group was Johnal Thompson, Jen Mason, Billy Carter, and Evans Woodson. Baby Don't go was released in '67 on Brown's own label, Big Jim. The record made so noise on Midwest radio stations, but would appear to be the Clevelanders only disc. Jim Brown was called to California, and movies....and the Occasions and the B...
The Norvells - Without You
Переглядів 2,6 тис.10 років тому
Nice Richard Pegue production from 1968 on Penny Records. The Norvells cut a handful of good tracks for a couple different labels durin Chicag's heyday as a center of Soul recordings. Pookie loves the feel of this track, with good crooning by the Norvells, and Pegue's backup girls....the Voices. Love This

Nice one😊
I swear I’ve heard this before, but feel as it’s my first listening to this. Can’t be Deja vu 🤔
This song exculpates my love life so much right now it just feels so pure raw honest And truly exciting sometimes we think we know love but then time passes things change then you meet someone and boom it hits you like a train of emotion with a deep feeling of warmth and then your life changes if this is what real love feels like then I want this forever i just Orderd the record and Can’t wait to play it out and I’ll always think of you when I do love you Nat x
Hellos to All,One of my favourites from back in the Day when Vinyls were the Order of the Day,Never forgetting the Classic voice of Mr Chandler here in South Africa,Truly Blessed to live in this Era,VWM.
Dusty, Sharon Tate & Diana Hyland always make me think of my big sister Carole. Dusty was the most soulful of all the Brits.
They sound so-ooooo good - that harmony - too cold!
Always liked this one. Thanks for the post!
This used was played regularly at parties in Jamaica in the 70s and is still a favorite of real music enthusiasts.
Love this song,
Saw Blue Magic, Chiltes and Stylistics Valentine day in Cleveland...what a great concert.
Old school from my college days . Wish time would reverse. Lot of these stars are in music heaven
The closer it gets to Fathers Day each year I listen to more and more of Walter Jackson. My Dad introduced me to him 40 years ago and he left me all Jacksons music on vinyl. Thanks Dad, RIP.
My brother introduced me to this song and a letter has come (Vietnam) while he was in the service. Though he is gone and thank him everyday for these heart touching songs and the lives sacrificed for a war that should not have been...
This song is beautiful
J Dilla brought me here!🔥
Bravo - they were good. A unique mix of folk rock with Motown, but waaay before anyone was thinking in such terms.
Sure do wonder who she’s kissing now
This is an underated oldie but goodie right here. Glad I stumbled upon it.
Have been my favorite group since my friend Linzie Pancho Coles Came home from FiskUniversity in 69 and introduced me to the There Is album. This is my favorite song by the Dells and I have a lot of them...
Keep on rockin' in the freak world.
Saw him sing this tune a number of times in Detroit back in the 70s......one of the absolute best
One of the few sixties songs I think has some soul. I meant from a rock perspective. But the talent is there, and it's not a mistake that members went on to be great artists. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great memories, great friends, great song... Too all that's still here
Eddie`s GREAT, Always Was! God Bless Him!
I didn’t see anybody talking about it yet but this is straight up Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure. was Robert Smith paying attention ?

Hi! My name is Lucille “Vicki” Burgess. I’m one of the original members of the Joytones; still going strong at 87 years old. I just want to say thank you for the warm compliments of this song! I’m the one in the middle (much younger then 😊).
Hey Vicki.....I'm the guy who posted this....Met you in Pittsburgh years ago when you were with Willie & Raul....Don't think you'd remember me asking you about this tune, but I knew exactly who you were when they introduced you....Glad to hear you're doing well.....and of course love your talent and wish you the best....
Hi Beautiful Song as well as you and your sisters may God continue to Bless you 🙏
